Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has extended congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump on behalf of the government and the people of Saint Lucia.
“Saint Lucia looks forward to strengthening its diplomatic relations with the United States of America for the benefit of our people,” Pierre wrote on Facebook.
Donald Trump romped to victory in Tuesday’s United States presidential election in a stunning comeback four years after the electorate voted him out of the White House.
The 78-year-old recaptured the White House on Wednesday by securing more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency.
The U.S. President-elect has put immigration at the front of his campaign agenda, vowing to bring “unprecedented order” to the southern border and launch the nation’s largest mass deportation operation of undocumented immigrants on his first day in office.
“They have to come in legally,” Trump declared during his victory speech in Florida.
On Wednesday, Saint Lucia’s opposition leader, Allen Chastanet, acknowledged America’s right to secure its borders.
Nevertheless, the United Workers Party (UWP) leader warned that tightening immigration controls could affect the Caribbean, especially Saint Lucia.
Chastanet said he hopes the Trump administration will increase its focus on Caribbean issues, especially by making United States visas more accessible, perhaps establishing a processing center in Saint Lucia.
