Banannes Bay fishers meet with port officials on temporary relocation

Fishers at Banannes Bay got the opportunity to air concerns and hear directly from officials about temporary relocation plans during construction of the new Saint Lucia Cruise Port.

The session, held last Tuesday, and hosted by Saint Lucia Cruise Port (SLCP) in partnership with the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA), focused on how the project will affect the day-to-day operations of the fishing community and what accommodations are being put in place.

SLCP revealed that three 40-foot containers will be installed and fully outfitted with lockers and space for fishers’ freezers to ensure continuity of their operations during the works.

“These facilities will be available to every boat owner, allowing fishers to safely store their equipment and continue necessary repairs to boats and gear without disruption,” it said in a press release.

SLCP also shared details about the future arrangements, which included more hygienic facilities for fish cleaning and sales as well as improved amenities for the local fishers of Banannes Bay and their customers.

  1. In the first instance, this Bananas Bay shanty town (30 years ago), should never have been allowed to “prosper”, as well as the houses along the Castries/La Toc road alongside the old banana shed and SLASPA Ferry Service. SLASPA should NEVER have allowed that bad housing to come to what it is today, after the highway was built. SLASPA has shut down and /or terminated quite a few “prosperous” ventures (ferry services between Point Seraphine and Castries City Centre – among other ventures), but not the Bananas Bay fisherman’s shanty town (all they did not have were schools and churches inside there.). Instead of residences along that part of the highway, mercantile offices should have been erected there to ease shipments in/out of Castries. Talk about bad city planning … I put the blame squarely on SLASPA and the “Myopic Misfit” politicians of the day. Only NOW they scrambling to “fix it”. Shame!!
