Defending champions La Clery remained top of the table with a game in hand, whilst former leaders Mabouya Valley ceded ground after an upset loss to Soufriere at the weekend, in the latest action from the Saint Lucia Semi Professional Football League. Four games were played over the Jounen Kwéyòl weekend in Tier 1 at the Soufrière Stadium.
Central Castries remain in fourth place after the October 24 fixture against Canaries, but a 2-1 loss for the men from the capital will give joy to Gros Islet, fifth with a game in hand. Jadan Longville and veteran striker David Henry netted either side of halftime to hand sixth-placed Canaries a 2-0 lead. A 73rd-minute Messiah Pinel marker pulled one back for Central, but it was insufficient to earn Central what would have been their fifth draw since their last win in early September. The win for Canaries was their third.
Dennery are steadily climbing off the bottom of the table, now in eighth place. They thumped Choiseul 4-1 for a second win in the last five matchdays. Sherman St Rose gave Dennery a 1-0 halftime lead, only for Ajani Louis to equalize in the 52nd minute. But a goal from Elijah Joseph and a brace from Denelson Jones won the victory for Dennery.
La Clery returned to action for the first time in three weeks, after the death of talented youngster Ajani Hippolyte. They picked up right where they had left off, winning 4-1 over South Castries, now propping up the table with only nine points, despite beating Mabouya Valley last week. LA were up 3-0 by the interval against South Castries, Yanic Noel, Daniel Martie, and Mervin St Romain all getting on the scoresheet. Malik Showtime St Prix added his seventh goal of the campaign in the second half, before a Joshua George consolation goal three minutes from time blotted La Clery’s potential clean sheet.
The Valley boys, coming off a draw and a loss, had the chance to make up some ground on La Clery, 11 points clear on 32. But Soufrière took full advantage of home cooking to eke out just their third triumph in 12 matches, one off the bottom of the table, but still very much in the relegation zone. Jahzani Henry’s seventh goal of the year came in the 13th minute, and it turned out to be the only goal of the game.
