With Saint Lucia’s general election set for December 1, the Electoral Department has observed a noticeable uptick in independent candidates.
Chief Elections Officer Herman St. Helen confirmed the trend during an interview with St. Lucia Times on election preparations, citing Micoud North as the constituency that has attracted the most interest so far, from “about five persons”.
Other constituencies registering interest from independents include Vieux Fort South, Castries North, and Anse La Raye/Canaries. “The regulars are there. Castries North has at least two. Vieux Fort South has two,” St. Helen said.
Official candidates will only be confirmed on Nomination Day, November 21.
St. Helen also affirmed that the Electoral Department remains “in a state of almost total readiness”, with the next steps including the training of returning officers to oversee the polls in all 17 electoral districts.
As part of accessibility improvements, he announced that all polling stations will be located on ground floors to accommodate persons with disabilities. Additionally, voting instructions will be posted in both English and Creole at polling locations.
The department is also finalising the electoral list and has made voter identification card verification a priority. “We have been asking persons to come in and check their ID cards,” he noted.
