After the West Indies won the toss and elected to field first, Afghanistan responded steadily in the powerplay by scoring 54-2. A mammoth 115-run partnership for the third wicket between Darwish Rasooli and Sediqullah Atal buoyed the first innings batting effort. Atal, dropped on 11, went on to score 53. Meanwhile, his partner Rasooli finished with consecutive scores of over 50, tallying 68 runs off 39 balls. The Afghans eventually finished their innings on 189-4.
Barbadian Matthew Forde finished as the pick of the Windies bowlers, claiming two wickets for 25 runs. Notably, the Men in Maroon displayed periods of woeful fielding again and failed to support the bowlers’ efforts.
In reply, the Windies struggled to find the boundary early on. However, a quick 68-run fourth-wicket partnership between Brandon King and Shimron Hetmyer brought the Men in Maroon back into contention. Afghanistan fought back strongly, taking wickets at regular intervals. Amidst the action, Mujeeb Ur Rahman claimed a hat trick and finished with remarkable figures of four wickets for 21 runs. The hosts eventually won by 39 runs.
The team will look to close out the final game of the series on a stronger note.
