Saint Lucia Cruise Port (SLCP) has given two full undergraduate scholarships to outstanding Saint Lucian students as part of the second year of its scholarship programme.
The scholarships were presented on Friday, August 7, to Shyne Savory and Rhea Barrett. They will study at universities in Canada and the United States.
Savory will go to Bishop’s University to study Arts Administration, focusing on Drama and minoring in Marketing. Barrett will go to Florida State University to study Cell and Molecular Neuroscience.
A press release says the SLCP scholarship pays for major educational and living costs, such as tuition, accommodation, books, meals, and airfare, for up to four years. Recipients can study at accredited universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or any University of the West Indies campus.
The scholarship started in 2025 and first supported four students studying engineering and medicine. For 2026, SLCP took a more focused approach, supporting both STEM and non-STEM fields that match Saint Lucia’s workforce and development needs.
This year, 93 students applied for the programme. They showed strong academics, community involvement, and a variety of interests.
SLCP also set up an online application system to handle submissions and help with the first screening. After that, a scholarship committee reviewed the shortlisted applicants without knowing their names, looking at their academic results, leadership potential, and how well they fit national priorities.
At the scholarship presentation, Bernice Marcellin, Director of the Human Resource Development Unit in the Ministry of Education, spoke about the need to develop skilled professionals in all fields to help the country grow.
John Paul Estephane, Minister in the Ministry of Tourism and Commerce, also welcomed the programme. He pointed out that private sector organisations can play an important role in helping young people and supporting national development.
Lancelot Arnold, Director of GPH Eastern Caribbean and General Manager of Saint Lucia Cruise Port, said the scholarship reflects the organisation’s commitment to “investing in people”.
Arnold said SLCP’s first group of scholars is doing well. He added that the organisation will keep supporting its scholarship recipients as they work toward their academic and professional goals.
With Savory and Barrett joining, SLCP said it looks forward to continuing to invest in Saint Lucia’s youth and helping develop future professionals and leaders in both STEM and the arts.
