Saint Lucia’s Olympic gold medallist Julien Alfred registered a season-best 10.83 seconds to finish second behind World champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden on Sunday. The two met for the first time this year over 100 metres at Sunday’s Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial.
The Stadion Śląski in Chorzów, Poland, also represented the first meeting of the two over the straight sprint since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Wooden, the American, equalled her season best with a 10.78-second clocking into a +0.6 m/s wind to secure the win, handing Alfred her third consecutive defeat over the distance in their rivalry. Sha’Carri Richardson placed third in 10.96 seconds.
The race analysis revealed how quickly the lead changed hands out of the blocks. Jamaica’s Clayton twins, Tia and Tina, got out quickly, running 1-2 through the first 30 metres. By the 40-metre mark, Wooden had surged to the front in 5.08 seconds, with Tina second and Alfred third at 5.11 seconds. Alfred overtook her younger Jamaican rival by the halfway point, crossing 50 metres in 6.06 seconds, but Jefferson-Wooden remained uncatchable through the tape.
“Running in a race of this quality feels amazing; I missed it a lot,” Alfred said after the race. “But I am in second place, so ‘great’ is not the right word, rather ‘disappointed’. But I am healthy. Melissa is a great athlete, and a lot of us give her a lot of respect. I still have Zurich, the 200m in Brussels and the 100m at the Ultimate Championships coming. I hope that in Zurich I will race better. It is the start; if I get better there, then I can win. It is a lot to work on.”
Sunday’s result squares the lifetime 100-metre series between Alfred and Wooden at four wins apiece. Wooden maintained her unbeaten record over 100 metres this season, though Alfred remains the only sprinter to defeat the American in 2026 after her earlier victory over 200 metres. Alfred has already qualified for next month’s Diamond League Final in the 200m, but she is also now third overall for the 100m, with just one qualifying meet to come, Thursday in Zurich.
Alfred’s progression remains on schedule. The top-end speed is evident, and the upright mechanics are intact; sharpening the opening steps out of the blocks will be the key adjustment as the Saint Lucian champion targets the top step of the podium in the weeks ahead.
