Coast Guard crews and the crew of the chemical tank ship Silver Dover assisted an 80-year-old boater in distress Saturday morning in the Caribbean Sea.
The rescue occurred approximately 57 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Rico.
The 80-year-old man was the sole individual aboard the 44-foot sailing vessel Tao.
According to the US Coast Guard, the vessel lost steering.
But in a coordinated search and rescue effort that included a Coast Guard aircraft, the 600-foot Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tank ship Silver Dover responded to an urgent appeal and diverted to render assistance.
The tank ship picked up the stranded sailor and reported that he was in good health.
The rescuers said he would remain aboard until the vessel reached its destination in Houston, Texas.
