Brazil Concerned Over New Tensions In Guyana-Venezuela Border Controversy

spot_img

Brazil has expressed concern over new developments in the border controversy involving Guyana and Venezuela, which have created tensions.

The concern came as Venezuela complained about a British warship deployment off Guyana’s coast.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, declared on Facebook that neither Venezuela nor any other State has anything to fear from activities within Guyana’s sovereign territory or waters.

Ali said Guyana has long partnered with regional and international states to enhance internal security.

Nevertheless, Venezuelan Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro referred to the British warship HMS Trent’s deployment as “the provocation and threat of the United Kingdom against peace and the sovereignty of our country.”

Maduro said the vessel’s presence broke the “spirit” of a recent agreement with Guyana not to use force to settle their border issue.

In addition, he ordered  his country’s armed forces to conduct defensive military exercises off Venezuela’s shores.

Reuters quoted the Brazilian Government saying on Friday that it believes in avoiding military demonstrations of support for any party so that the ongoing dialogue process can produce results.

According to Reuters, the statement urged all parties to “contain themselves” and resume talks.

  1. I agree with the statement of Maduro breaking the spirit of trust. Jagdeo will regret this. He that dictate what Ali do and say. In time to come you will see a better side of ALI and Jagdeo. That party have a history with it’s top ranks…

  2. I’m rather surprised by this comment. Before jumping to conclusions, 1 or more questions are in order. For example: Is this the first time that a foreign naval vessel has been in Guyana’s waters? Does Guyana as a sovereign nation have the right to allow/invite a foreign naval vessel to enter and remain in its waters? Several more questions can be asked, but I think you should get the drift.
Truth be told, I’m much more concerned about Venezuela complaining about the vessel which does not threaten them in any way, than by the presence of said vessel.
Are they suggesting that Guyana no longer has the sovereign right to do as they please? Does Guyana now have to clear any proposed step with Venezuelan leadership? Is Guyana therefore, subservient to Venezuela?
Or rather: Is it (as I suspect) a case where the bully is shocked to realize that his apparently weak and defensless intended victim may have strong friends who are willing to stand with him?
My suggestion to you Mr. Anonymous is that you do not allow your biases to cloud your judgement. To Venezuela I say shut up and wait to complain if your territorial integrity is violated. Your slip is showing. You have broadcast your nefarious intentions too clearly.

  3. Hahaha like some people still believe that each side should gear up same level of the battle field before you kick off a fight. Did Bush give Saddam any chance. Did NATO support Ukraine when Russia was undertaking excerise at Ukraine border. It only baffles me that with such tense situation they will go ahead and allow the Trent to arrive at port. That’s consider hostilities. There is an agreement stick to it. Simple.

  4. More reasons why Guyana should beef up its military, because there is no guarantee that they will get help. And they should have the mind set that Venezuela will attack at some point. Guyana don’t have the military muscles to be hostile to any country. Venezuela has always been the aggressor because they know they can wipe out Guyana in one hour. Did the agreement stated no military training in either country? Guyana need the international military power to assist in beefing up their military. Or, anonymous will have to send the RSS to assist.

  5. England and the US both instigators and provocateurs of world wars. Yull sign an accord and memorandum of understanding, the ink don’t even dry yet England run come……like granny would say you can’t put butter on knife in front of puss.
