Saint Lucia delivered a commanding performance in their Tier II Group C match of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Boys’ Under-14 Challenge Series at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday, defeating Sint Maarten 4-0, but then fell to defeat on Monday against Bermuda.
Saturday’s match saw Jaylan Hyppolite scoring in the 10th minute to put Saint Lucia ahead, just as they had been in their opening game against Bonaire.
This time around, however, the young Piton Boyz doubled their advantage in the 17th as Hyppolite stepped up and coolly converted a penalty.
In the second half, Nasri Alexander scored in the 45th minute, driving a powerful shot past the custodian. Alexander then slid the ball into the box three minutes later, giving Leon Vidal an easy finish, and extending the lead to 4-0.
On Monday, with their hopes of advancing to Friday’s semifinals hanging by a thread, Saint Lucia needed to hand group leaders their first and only loss, or at least get a point from them.
That latter possibility appeared feasible until one minute from full time, when the Bermudans got the go-ahead goal, virtually as the referee was drawing breath for the final whistle.
Saint Lucia’s final fixture in Tier II Group C will be Tuesday against Grenada, a game that could decide second place behind unbeaten Bermuda.
