SLOC Issues Advisory Regarding Julien Alfred Billboards

The St. Lucia Olympic Committee (SLOC) Inc. has warned of the strict prohibition against unauthorised depiction of the Olympic Rings on billboards.

In a statement on Monday, the SLOC said it had noticed some business places hoisting billboards with the Olympic Rings on them welcoming home Julien Alfred.

“The SLOC Inc. wishes to inform all concerned that the use of the Olympic Rings is strictly prohibited for use. The Olympic Rings are the exclusive property of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are a mark protected around the world and cannot be used without the IOC’s prior written consent,” the Committee statement advised.

“We look forward to the understanding of all and would appreciate if those rings can be blocked off immediately. The cooperation of all is needed at this time,” it stated.

Recently, questions also surfaced regarding the sale of Julien Alfred-themed paraphernalia ahead of her homecoming on Tuesday.

The questions followed a St. Lucia Times story on the sales.

The story drew several comments, with some readers expressing that Alfred should get compensation for using her name and image.

In addition, an attorney at law raised legal concerns regarding the issue.

  1. Average citizens who knew better had been raising awareness of such issue and you all are only now coming out with a last minute statement? This should had been done weeks ago. Who are these people on the Olympic Committee full of HINDSIGHT? Let’s see damage control take place before all these international cameras including Netflix land here for the celebration! It has been a culture in this country to do things just because we can. Not everyone has legal knowledge or understanding that research must be done before execution. The people on top with the capacity and the knowledge are doing nothing until something wrong happens…backwards ever!!!!

  2. Let’s not exploit Miss Alfred for our selfish gains and make it appear that we are welcoming her. She is a celebrity in her own right and should be compensated whenever anything about her is used. Let’s make her proud.

  3. Some still want to find excuses for those who practice this as though the Olympic Committee must always come forward and rearrange our ignorance on such. Observing those on the bandwagon seeking to exploit

  4. What a cast of characters in St. Lucia — what part of you can not use images of individuals, professionals, business entities, corporations etc. are you people lacking in basic knowledge and understanding – the whole world is looking at your ignorance – in addition, the international lawyers of which there are many – will soon come knocking at your door of ignorance for unauthorized usage – bayteeeze – what a shame…par dee poor jab ..

  5. Well some are saying they are using the AUDI car symbol, and not the Olympic rings, but the former is four and the latter five! And it’s still a trademark violation, anyway!
