Forty-eight Saint Lucians are preparing to leave for Taiwan at the end of August to pursue higher education, forming the largest group of local scholars to head to the country in a single year.
This year’s cohort also marks another milestone. For the first time, there is an equal number of men and women, with 24 young men and 24 young women receiving scholarships to study across a range of disciplines.
The scholars recently received their official scholarship documents during a ceremony at the Finance Administrative Centre, as they prepare for the move overseas and the start of their studies.
They will not be alone when they arrive. Taiwan’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Nicole Su, said the incoming students will join a sizeable Saint Lucian student community already pursuing studies there.
“When you arrive in Taiwan next month, there will be around 200 Saint Lucian students studying in Taiwan. This demonstrates the shared values of both Saint Lucian and Taiwan and our common aspiration to empower the youth through education. I am proud to share with you that Taiwan is globally recognised for innovation and competitiveness.”
The scholarships are part of the longstanding relationship between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, through which Saint Lucians have been given opportunities to pursue higher education abroad.
As the students prepare for the academic journey ahead, Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation Danny Butcher encouraged them to think beyond their own academic success and consider how their education can benefit others.
“I always want you to remember that with academic excellence comes service to humanity. Use your education to uplift others. Use your education to strengthen your nation. Use your education to ensure that someone else’s life is better with your influence.”
For the 48 scholars, the presentation of their documents brings them another step closer to beginning their studies and adjusting to life thousands of miles away from home.
