As Saint Lucia joined in the global observance of October 2 as World No Alcohol Day, there were new concerns over the misuse of intoxicating beverages, especially among the youth.
Wang Sonson, Deputy Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat (SAACS), emphasised the day’s importance during an address to mark the observance.
Sonson highlighted the profound impact of alcohol misuse not just on individual health but on families and society as a whole.
He underscored that alcohol consumption has woven itself into the cultural fabric of Saint Lucia, particularly in social gatherings where youth start drinking at an early age.
According to Sonson, early alcohol exposure can lead to a life-long struggle with alcohol misuse, resulting in a myriad of serious health issues.
“The misuse of alcohol is associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental health disorders, and injuries,” Sonson remarked, pointing out the escalating healthcare costs and the burden that such health issues place on families and the nation.
Moreover, the misuse of alcohol extends beyond health, contributing to social problems, including domestic violence, crime, and road accidents.
“These challenges not only affect individuals and families but also threaten the safety and security of our communities,” Sonson warned while urging citizens to reflect on their choices regarding alcohol consumption.
As Saint Lucia observed World No Alcohol Day, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs called on all citizens to prioritise their health and wellness.
“Let us educate ourselves and others on the risks associated with alcohol abuse and encourage habits of moderation and responsibility,” Sonson stated.
He also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering a healthy society where individuals can thrive.
Amazing, finally someone is concerned.
It is promoted, constantly, with most All activities in this country. We talk about drug abuse, alcohol is the legal drug.
It keeps people stupid . Let’s promote health.
Why is the stuff still legal!
If you’ll were serious, talk of criminalising alcohol would have beeen a discussion point.
Maybe we should ban Alcohol completely..
People must understand the effects it takes in us..it’s the lack of money that creates our current situation here and elsewhere in our current situation..thank you for sharing this with me
