Saint Lucia’s Asa Francis finished fourth overall to lead the Coppin State men’s cross country team to a team title at the Coach Caslin Classic, hosted by Goucher College this past weekend. On the women’s side, the Eagles took third of four full teams with Halutie Hor pacing the squad, and another Saint Lucian, Kimani Alphonse, 18th.
Francis covered the eight-kilometre (5-mile) course in 28:50.36, shaving over a minute and a half off his time at the same course this time last year. He also ran more than half a minute faster than he did at the Soaring Hawk Invitational in September.
At the Coach Caslin Classic, Etiam Torgbenu finished in 29:24.11, good for seventh overall. Abdul Razak ended in 31:04.51, followed by Dentry Mortimer in his collegiate cross country debut at 31:51.67.
Finishing 21st and 22, respectively, were Saint Lucia’s Jayeed Norbal (34:24.76) and Amiri Goode (34:47.33). Cole Schlotterbeck also competed and crossed the finish in 40:43.73.
Hor covered the women’s 6K course in 31:10.36 to finish 13th overall to lead the women’s team. Alphonse, Kyah La Fortune, and Karima Davenport-White came in at 18th, 19th, and 20th overall with 24 seconds between the trio. Gifty Oku finished in 34:52.91, good for 22nd place.
Coppin will return to action on Friday, October 18 at Howard’s Bison Invitational at Kenilworth Park in Washington, DC.
