Former Health Minister Is New OKEU Hospital Head

The Millennium Heights Medical Complex( MHMC), which encompasses the OKEU Hospital and the Wellness Centre here, has a new man at the helm.

As of November 1, 2024 the operations at the facility, are being managed by Damian Greaves who will serve as CEO.

Greaves is a former Parliamentarian and Minister of Government having served in the Government between 1997-2009.

He is a former Minister for Community Development, Culture, Local Government, Cooperatives and Ecclesiastical Affairs (1997-2001) and Minister for Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender relations from 2001-2006.

Greaves’ appointment comes at a time went the island’s main medical facility has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

The OKEU has seen the resignation of at least six key medical professionals in recent months, among them Dr. Merle Clarke who is the head of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA).

The SLMDA had also written to the Government recently, addressing a number of concerns, some of which reflected the feelings of the public.

Among the concerns were shortages of medical supplies, inadequate beds as well as inadequate space in the emergency room. Some medical professionals also appeared to be at loggerheads with the board of MHMC facility.

Damian Greaves who is a former professor at the St. Georges University in Grenada is a former director of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition and sat on the National Advisory Board for National Health Insurance in Grenada.

He also chaired the Grenada National Commission on Non-Communicable Diseases.

  1. Good appointment of a well qualified and competent individual, hoping that the institution will be managed effectively.

  2. Same old story on this wretched island: keep recycling failed politicians to provide jobs for the boys and girls! This man has no right nor successful track record to justify such an appointment. His appointment is beyond ridiculous at this time. When will this buffoonery end?

  3. Congratulations on your new appointment . I believe that you will deliver an efficient and effective healthcare system in st lucia and will also pave the way for universal healthcare in the island forward ever backward never

  4. Respectfully, he is absolutely not qualified for this job. He’s has zero health administration experience and certainly has not been successful at improving an institution in crisis like OKEU. Please don’t let pieces of paper fool you my people. You also should not believe that he is doing this work over a love of country. I’d like to see all the terms and fringe benefits attached to his appointment.

  5. Another comment encapsulated the reality of this SLP nepotism appointment. The recycling of old failed politicians, jobs for the boys, no planning or blueprint for management of taxpayers resources. Just wasting taxpayers money.
This man was abysmal as Minister of Health. In a previous administration After Sarah Flood cleaned up Health then they fired her, this joker had Health back to complete dysfunctional mayhem after just one year.
If anyone knows SLP politicians they simply do NOT have the skillset for management. Their agenda is self agrandizement utilising the taxes you the people pay. The objectives of the citizen is completely different from the SLP cabal.
Enjoying the perks of office is their only skillas we have seen again since 2021.
Castries is a dirty, disordered mess. Traffic horrendous, internal security gutted, health a danger to health, corruption rampant in government and public finance wasted in spite of all the taxes we pay.
I am not sure that Lucians are aware that there is a better world in this little paradise we call St Lucia where we can feel safe at home, where our medical needs are met in a calm systematic manner, where we have money left over after payday and where we can have a calm peaceful lifestyle.
It is possible but not under this venal inept SLP cabal.

  6. Political Patronage at it’s finest.Meanwhile supporters of the current government are all over blaming “Flambeau docors” for deliberately sabotaging our Health care system. Masters of deflection and gaslighting!

  7. I always know st lucia is falling ,it’s because of some dangerous people, some self-centered vermin’s, I wonder if( pensive) and( wait really) have the qualifications he has, and if so what have you tried doing for the country to make it better, rather than criticizing, the man has his qualifications ,politics have you all saying those things, ,you people don’t care about the people of the nation, but to just make war with each other, go and ask god to change your hearts and forgive you for your sins, leave the man alone let him do his job, i have seen to many come and had to leave ,let us see what he can do if he can’t he will be out , give him a chance it’s his time and luck follow his progress. choops tan.

  8. Job for the boys scheme. A doctor with managerial experience should be in that position. Nothing against him as a person but surely, this is not the ideal post for him.

  9. A very qualified and understanding individual who will be able to bring his experience and expertise to the organization. This will auger well for St Lucians and the country at large. Putting people first. A win win situation given the plan to start the new construction to begin in the coming months.

  10. In any real world the competent authorities particularly the doctors would look at GREAVES previous record as Minister of Health , at his subsequent track record and be making one hell of a noise about his appointment.
Instead everyone has taken moo moo pills.
One of the pillars of our society has appointed a party old boy in a purely nepotistic move and we all just sit there with our lives in danger.
Same goes for internal security, for the inflation killing our pockets and say nothing.
In the supermarket yesterday saw a mother with two kids paying at the till. Two small bags of groceries $168. How do people survive day to day here?
Yet as we see the incompetence, ineptitude, bobol, of our so called leaders – we say nothing.

  11. The jury is out on Damian Greaves , he certainly has a background in health. I commend him on furthering his education and holding a number of regional positions I think he has served his apprenticeship and it’s appropriate a son of the soil should now serve his country . I wish him the best of luck in his new role.
