The streets of Castries came alive on New Year’s Day with the vibrant return of Assou Square, the annual event that celebrates Saint Lucian culture, music, and community. This year’s festivities featured an exciting lineup of live performances, competitions, and activities, drawing locals and visitors alike to the heart of the capital.
Assou Square 2025 featured a variety of competitions, including a calypso and country and western showdown, and a DJ competition that showcased immense local talent. The event drew people from all walks of life to enjoy the festivities and connect with their roots.
Among the many dignitaries in attendance was the Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Kenson Casimir, who was excited about the event.
“I feel very blessed to be here in 2025. It’s something that the kids generally come out to enjoy. People from all walks of life, all over Saint Lucia, people who I have not seen for a while [are here] and so it’s something that I think everybody is enjoying,” he said.
Looking ahead, Casimir shared his optimism for the year: “I’m certainly looking forward to a very productive 2025… a year of execution in my constituency of Gros Islet, specifically, and of course, all around Saint Lucia.”
The performances at the event were just as lively, with producer and performer, TC Brown bringing the crowd to life.
“Performing at the square, just the mere fact all sorts of people gather on the square, it’s really a good vibe. The sound was great, the mood of the people was great. We had a bumper 2024; all eyes were on Saint Lucia. For 2025, we just have to keep going up. That’s my wish for my country, that we could bring down the level of crime, and…bring up each, and the youth could really shine.”
Assou Square 2025 also featured notable appearances from artists like Dezral Long, a celebrated calypsonian and former Calypso Monarch. He shared his hopes for growth in the island’s cultural and economic sectors.
“I just hope we get better in all aspects, in all facets in our music, art, business, and tourism, and just everything. Let’s stay true to ourselves. Let’s keep loving ourselves. Keep on finding out who we are, and we will go forward,” he said.
As the festivities carried on into the night, the rich sounds of Saint Lucia’s calypso, soca, and country music filled the air, keeping the crowd energised and united in celebration.
