Chastanet Hails Taiwan As An ‘Incredible Partner’

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has praised Taiwan as an incredible partner while welcoming that country’s newest ambassador to Saint Lucia, Her Excellency Nicole Su, who succeeds Ambassador Peter Chen.

“Taiwan has been an incredible partner in our nation’s development, investing in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture,” Chastanet observed in a Facebook post.

He assured Ambassador Su that in her new role, she has friends in Saint Lucia who value and appreciate her country’s unwavering support.

“We wish you great success, meaningful partnerships, and a fulfilling tenure in Saint Lucia,” the United Workers Party (UWP) leader and former Prime Minister said.

Saint Lucia has alternated diplomatic relations between mainland China and Taiwan, choosing Taiwan in 1984— the first time the country established diplomatic relations with either—then switching to China in 1997 and reverting to Taiwan in 2007.

Taiwan has been a generous donor to Saint Lucia, assisting in areas including education, infrastructure, and agricultural projects to reduce reliance on imported food.

In November last year, the Government of Saint Lucia received a $5.09 million grant from Taiwan to support strategic development projects.

The grant aims to strengthen capacity, improve climate resilience, and support economic development.
