Mayor of Castries Assures Parking Meter Plans Moving Forward

Mayor of Castries Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel has reaffirmed her commitment to implementing the long-anticipated parking meter system, aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing economic activity in the city.

Several meters were installed in the capital last year but they are not yet in operation. However, the Mayor indicated that plans for them to be utilised remain in the works.

Parking meters were installed last year but they are still not in service.

In a recent statement, she outlined key steps to move the initiative forward, emphasising the importance of proper signage and community consultation as vital components of the implementation process.

To ensure widespread awareness, the Mayor confirmed that the initiative will be supported by a comprehensive public education campaign, including traditional media and social media platforms.

Acknowledging that change often meets resistance, she expressed optimism about the public’s eventual acceptance of the parking meters.

“We know some people will be affected. Change is always something that people respond to differently,” she said.

Lendor-Gabriel also highlighted the broader issue of traffic congestion, noting that even neighbouring areas like Gros Islet are experiencing similar challenges.

“People initially felt that if the city is congested, they could simply drive to Gros Islet, but now the Gros Islet Highway is also congested. So it calls for change,” she explained.

The Mayor stressed the need for a shift in transportation habits and improvements in public transport services: “It calls for people leaving their vehicles home when they can. And there will be also a need for our public system to also respond as well.”
