Windwards Downed by Barbados in Women’s Super50

The Windward Islands lost their second CG United Women’s Super50 Cup fixture on Wednesday, falling by 56 runs to Barbados at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis. The Islanders won the toss, elected to field first, and got off to a quick start with the ball.

Saint Lucia and West Indies Under-19 fast bowler Selena Ross took the first wicket for the Windwards. She bowled West Indies teammate Asabi Callender for nought in the second over. Ross ended with 1-10 from three overs.

Pearl Etienne bowled Trishan Holder in the third over, but a 115-run partnership ensued between the Knight twins. The West Indies pair was finally separated with the score on 124, Kycia Knight taken by Jannillea Glasgow for 63. Three balls later, Knight was followed by Naijanni Cumberbatch for one.

After a strong recovery, Barbados lost this last six wickets for 37 runs, to end on 181 all in 43.3 overs. Glasgow took the other Knight, Kyshona, this time via run out for 51. Afy Fletcher got 2-37. Etienne added a second wicket to end on 2-22. Windwards captain Zaida James captured 2-30. And Glasgow collected 2-24.

Chasing 182 for victory, Windwards were dismissed for 125 in 30.5 overs. Saint Lucia’s Ashlene Edward, who made a half-century in the sub-regional competition earlier this month, gave her team a solid foundation with 31 runs from 30 balls. She hit five fours before leaving with the score on 37 in the eighth over.

Earnisha Fontaine was out for 14, the West Indies trio of Glasgow, Fletcher, and Nerissa Crafton for 11, two, and eight, and Japhina Joseph for three. Fletcher’s 23-run partnership with Joseph gave the innings a brief flourish. Joseph’s dismissal was followed by Fletcher’s for 29 off 26, with the score on 103, effectively ending the Windwards challenge.

Cumberbatch took 3-20, Aaliyah Alleyne 2-13, and Keila Elliott 2-14.

On Friday, the Windward Islands play Trinidad & Tobago. Both teams have one win and one loss. The Tribagonians lost to Jamaica on Monday and beat the Leeward Islands on Wednesday.
