Clifford Reclaims National Weight Throw Record

Saint Lucia’s national record for women’s weight throw was improved once again this week. The title reverted to former record holder Lauralynn Clifford less than two weeks after she relinquished it. The 21-year-old came within a centimetre of throwing 19 metres.

Clifford, who attended high school in Canada, is a senior at Coastal Carolina University. She competed on Wednesday at the 2025 Sun Belt Indoor Track Championships. With a personal-best throw of 18.99m (62′ 3.75″) she finished seventh in her event for the Chanticleers at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama, USA.

Clifford threw 18.41m last year to set the national record. On Valentine’s Day this year, that mark was erased by Natalie Albert. Albert, a University of Memphis student-athlete, threw 18.58m at the Bulldog Invite and Open.

Clifford, who also holds Saint Lucia’s record for the hammer throw, stormed back, however. She bested Albert’s weight throw mark three times in this week’s conference championship. Clifford sent the 20-pound ball flying out to 18.82m on her first attempt to move briefly into third place. She then hit her personal best on her fourth attempt and tossed 18.70m for good measure in the sixth round of the competition.

The event was won by Michelle Ogbemudia of Arkansas State in 21.75m.

Saint Lucia’s national record holder for shotput, Joy Edward, threw 16.48m to finish 14th for Troy University.
