Alphonse Dominates VF Road Race in Stunning Victory

The Saint Lucia Cycling Association hosted a road race for senior and junior cyclists on Sunday, with 11 riders tackling the Vieux Fort circuit. Seventeen-year-old Denver Alphonse delivered a commanding performance to claim the senior title, while Gedeon Louis emerged victorious in the junior category.

In the senior division, Alphonse blazed through the 88.7-kilometre course in 2:27:36.78, finishing a remarkable eight minutes ahead of second-place Gillan Moses. Veteran cyclist Winston “Stony” Williams secured third, another eight minutes behind Moses. The remaining senior finishers included Andray Volney, Fidel Esnard, Jordan Richard, and Kirby Anthony.

A student at Entrepot Secondary School, Alphonse maintained an impressive average speed of 36.1 km/h. After breaking away from the pack at the 13-kilometre mark, he rode solo for the remaining 76 km, showcasing his endurance and skill.

Meanwhile, five Under-17 riders contested a 76 km course. Louis clinched the junior title with a time of 2:45:06.96, followed by Merkelan Dornelly (12 minutes behind) and Kivanni Mercier (15 minutes further back). Female cyclist Seraphina William secured fourth place, finishing just two minutes behind third.

Dornelly and Mercier attend St. Mary’s College, while William is a student at Beanfield Comprehensive Secondary School.
