Saint Lucia won two of their four games at the Caribbean Football Union Under-14 Girls’ Challenge in Trinidad & Tobago, with forward Kayla Polius scoring three straight hat-tricks in the standout performance
A student at the Saint Lucia Sports Academy, Polius emerged as the leading scorer in League C, with 10 goals.
Saint Lucia were third in their group with two wins and two losses, including a narrow 4-3 reversal against Dominica. But even in that match, Polius’ hat-trick earned her player of the match honours.Â
The campaign began poorly, with a 7-1 loss to the United States Virgin Islands, in which Polius opened her account from the penalty spot. The young Piton Girlz could have gone into the break with the game tied, but they were unable to convert a couple of excellent scoring chances.Â
Against Dominica, Polius scored all three goals in the first half, twice equalising after Dominica had gone ahead, and then taking the 3-2 lead into halftime. But goals from Yashiayah Elie, Kelsey Hussey, Breanna Briggs, and an own goal secured back-to-back victories for Dominica.
On Sunday against Bonaire, Polius hit her second hat-trick. She outpaced the defence and demonstrated her two-footedness, balance and power to score in the fifth minute, and then again in the 38th and 49th.
Polius made it three in consecutive games to lead Saint Lucia to a 5-0 win over St Kitts & Nevis on Monday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. Polius converted from the penalty spot in the 15th minute, then turned provider for Sashaly Martyr (19’) to extend the lead. The Roseau native tallied again in the 24th, and bagged her hat-trick via a remarkable 43rd-minute free-kick from about 30 yards. Â
Chassity McDonald (70’+1) headed home from close range to round off scoring for Saint Lucia.
In all, Polius ended with all but two of Saint Lucia’s 12 goals. Hailing from CT Foundation FC and an alumna of Gordon & Walcott Memorial Methodist School, she is in her third year of national representation. She played in the 2023 edition of the CFU 14 Challenge, scoring four goals. She also played a role as Saint Lucia made last year’s Concacaf Under-15 League C final against hosts Aruba.
