How to prepare to vote in Saint Lucia’s upcoming general election

Soon, Saint Lucians will be heading to the polls to decide who will lead the country for the next five years. Whether it’s your first time voting or not, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared.

  1. Check your registration status

According to the Electoral Department, if you already have a Saint Lucian national identification card or voted in the last general election, you are registered to vote.

Saint Lucian citizens, as well as Commonwealth citizens who have lived in the country for at least seven years and in an electoral district for at least two months, are eligible to register once they are 18 years or older.

Those who have been legally declared of unsound mind, are imprisoned, or are under a sentence of death are not qualified to register.

  1. How to register

To register, visit the Electoral Department located at #23 High Street, Castries, in the Godfrey James Building. You’ll need to bring:

        Your birth certificate

        National Insurance Card

        Marriage certificate (if applicable)

If you were not born in Saint Lucia, you must present either a Certificate of Registration or Certificate of Naturalisation, which can be obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  1. If you’ve moved

If you have changed your address since you last registered, you must update your registration to reflect your new address.

  1. Know your district

Saint Lucia is divided into 17 electoral districts. To ensure transparency, the Electoral Department revises the register of electors for each district annually and publishes a supplementary list twice a year.

These lists are posted at various locations across the island for public review. Members of the public have 12 days after publication to file claims or objections to names appearing — or missing — from the list.

By January 31 each year, the register for each district is updated to include new electors from the previous year’s supplementary lists, remove ineligible names, and make other changes in line with the Elections Act.

  1. Confirm your details online

You can confirm the electoral district under which you are registered and access additional information on the registration process by visiting the Electoral Department’s website at https://www.sluelectoral.com/electoral/voter-record-search/.
