Chastanet tenders resignation as UWP Leader

Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet formally tendered his resignation as political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) after the party’s crushing defeat in the 2025 General Election.

The UWP secured only one seat, Chastenet’s seat in Micoud South, in the December 1 poll. The Saint Lucia Labour Party won 14 seats, with the remaining two going to independent candidates aligned with the government bench.

The UWP confirmed the resignation in a December 5 press release saying, “During the course of the [strategic] meeting, the Chairman of the United Workers Party, Mr Therold Prudent, formally advised the gathering that he is in receipt of a letter from the Political Leader Allen Chastanet, in which Mr Chastanet tenders his resignation as Political Leader of the United Workers Party. It is to be formally tabled for consideration by the National Executive at its next scheduled meeting during the second week of December 2025.

“The United Workers Party remains committed to transparency, democratic processes, and the continued advancement of its mission in service to the people of Saint Lucia.”

Several political observers placed responsibility for the party’s performance squarely at Chastanet’s feet, noting that it was the second consecutive landslide loss under his leadership, following a similar humbling in 2021.

Chastanet has held the role as political leader for 12 years.

  1. That is a very respectable move that no other politician in this place would’ve done. While I have little respect for politicians, this leads me to have a tab bit of respect for this guy.

  2. I think he had great plans for the country but there seems to be too much division within and persons of poor character aligned to the party..
Well they both have that later problem

  3. Respectable? What respectable? Allen had NO choice in the matter. With two consecutive losses he had no other choice. So, there is nothing respectable about this move.

  4. Allen was supposed to have done this 2 to 3 years ago. Now, as we are swearing in our new prime minister, he is trying to steal the attention; not gonna work.
History will show that he is and will remain the worst prime minister in the region and can be credited for the complete collapse of the United workers party.

  5. Some persons just wanted to see him humiliated and embarrassed every single time. When Kenny lost didn’t he resign same night?

  6. What choice did he have? We gave him an opportunity in 2016 and literally blew it. I think he needs to go play with his own money now

  7. His resignation was always on the horizon, given the poor results from two consecutive elections. Yet the timing is telling: he chose to step down precisely as the continuing Prime Minister was being sworn in. It feels less like coincidence and more like a calculated move to remain in the spotlight. True to form, Chastanet seems intent on positioning himself at the center of attention, a gesture that comes across as more about visibility than humility — almost as if he cannot resist the pull of the stage.

  8. It’s only government workers that are benefiting and living a good life in the country. There is nothing in this for private sector workers even if the government enacted a minimum wage that is still not enough money plus there are employers who are still not paying the workers the minimum wage good thing that I does not vote for any party or politicians never will

  9. Great. Next election, I can finally vote for my party. Well, as long as it is not Guy Joseph they put as political leader.

  10. Resigning is a tard bit too late, however better late than never. You cannot teach a classroom if you don’t know the students…

  11. Chastanet created his downfall. He was asked not to bring back the 3 rejected politicians back, but he insisted, now he paid for it. What next
I want in the next election to bring back Guy , Dominic and Herod.

  12. I don’t think he did the right thing. The guys on UWP have been influenced by SLP operatives. This will further weaken the UWP. What Chastanet should have done is spend the next few years identifying great candidates that can be strategic assets to the party. This takes work and dedication. That loss gives him time to build an unbeatable team and to work on a vision that he can present to the population. The excessive unnecessary expenses should be curbed at all levels. The UWP must build a manifesto as of now , study it carefully. And think of ways to implement later. But a strong core group of 17 candidates must be identified as the first order of business

  13. Finally what st lucians wanted is now a reality. We wanted his political career FINISH and the results of the election reflects that. UWP supporters, he had no choice so he was obligated to resign as leader. What I can assure u, is that he will still be an issue if he stays in the party. Chastanet pah bon. We don’t want him in our politics

  14. I see there are alot of people here who dont understand constitution. The party does not belong to Allen Chastanet, he was only the leader. The decision to remain as leader, is not up to him, but up to the members of the board. The board of a party can force a leader to step down with a vote of no confidence. In the case of the SLP, the push for Kenny Anthony to step down as leader, was instrumental in their victory.

  15. I am just in the comments sections all day salivating and rubbing my hands with glee haha ha ha ha ahhhhhhh ha ha ha hai have read nothing above about his tenure , visions, and missteps all I am interested in is the “R” Word. As granny would say “cockroach have no business being in fowl pen”….but I will add my two cents.,,,,this has been a TRIUMPHANT WEEK in the country’s history John Compton rolling in his grave good for him they killed his party many moons ago when they INSULTED Stephenson King by placing Allan Chastanet as party leader.. they were of the “myth”. Allan Chastanet was a winnable candidate, he was this was a savvy businessman man that would deliver their “here my dear I present to you Dubai even with his failed business ventures they still went and brought the Micoud South seat for him to run and “white wash” St Lucian’s in believing that he was their great white hope. Fast forward he proved to be a disaster for the country, leaving behind Billions for St Lucian’s to repay due to his physical mismanagement. Now they have taken another beaten and rightfully so they had nothing for St Lucian’s but the same false hopes and lies. I hope he remains in the UWP as “ their consultant “ along with his second in command this will certainly ensure another landslide for the SLP….. boy it looks like Pierre will be another Ralph and that’s not such a bad thing he has been doing a good job with all he inherited. Phillip J Pierre is the first blue collar Prime Minister of St Lucia and he is smart and that’s what made him a winner, there are more of his kind amongst us than the oligarchs who only cares about their cliques.

  16. His arrogance among other things resulted in this damning defeat. They are so smart by rejecting his resignation. What a bunch of fools. Next time around we are looking at 17-0.
