Saharan dust originates from the vast Sahara Desert in North Africa, the world’s largest hot desert. During late spring and summer, strong surface winds lift fine particles of sand and mineral dust into the atmosphere. These particles are then carried thousands of miles westward across the Atlantic Ocean by prevailing trade winds.
