Didier records historic win at Boxing Worlds

Saint Lucian teenager John Didier made history by advancing past the opening rounds of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Men’s World Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Competing in the 80-kilogram light heavyweight class on Friday, December 5, the 19-year-old moved on to the Round of 16, the first time a Saint Lucian boxer has advanced beyond the first round of a world championship.

The Vieux Fort native faced 26-year-old Ivorian Fofana Moussa Ben Ali at the Dubai Tennis Centre. Fighting from the red corner, Didier had much the better of the opening exchanges, subjecting his opponent to a barrage of blows. Showcasing superior technique, power and ring control, Didier won the first round 10-8 from all five judges, whilst Ben Ali was given two standing eight counts and a point deduction.

The second round was more even, but Didier still won on a 4-1 split. With 1:04 remaining in the third and final round, the Ivory Coast boxer was disqualified by Azerbaijani referee Gadirov Rovshan for excessive holding.

“Today is a big day at home, with the inauguration of the Prime Minister, and so I wanted to go out and make it special,” said Didier. “So I am happy with the result. This win is for Saint Lucia and everyone who continues to support and believe in the national boxing programme.”

President of the Saint Lucia Boxing Association, David Shakes Christopher, who is also in Dubai, celebrated Didier’s win. Christopher said the performance “was nothing short of exceptional… His discipline, determination, and technical brilliance are a testament to the hard work he has put in. The entire nation is proud.”
