Barbados took the President’s Cup, Trinidad & Tobago’s Benjamin Martin won the first-ever Professional Division, and Saint Lucian players claimed four victories as the second annual Saint Lucia Golf Open concluded on Sunday, May 3, at the Sandals Saint Lucia Golf & Country Club. A total of 118 golfers registered, over 30 more than last year, representing 15 nations.
Barbados’ golfers shot 228 over three days, taking the top spot partly due to a poor second day by the home team. Saint Lucia finished second with 240, Antigua & Barbuda third with 241, overtaken by Saint Lucia on Day 3. Jamaica trailed Antigua by four points, and Trinidad & Tobago were 11 points behind third.
In the Professional Division, marking a new chapter for golf in Saint Lucia, Martin shot 6-over 219 to beat Chris Johnson of the USA for the top prize of USD $7,500. Martin scored 35 on the last nine, while Johnson scored 37. Saint Lucia’s Ryan Daniel shot 251.
Australia’s Dean Richards, a US collegian, beat Barbados’ Xzavier Wiggins by three strokes to win the Championship Division, 225 to 228. Richards saved his best for last, scoring 72 in the final round. Saint Lucia’s Keymani Thomas and Harith Khan tied for third with 244. Top finishers earned World Amateur Golf Ranking points.
Saint Lucia’s Catherine Spooner, second last year, had three consistent rounds, scoring under 90 each time and totalling 263, beating Jamaica’s Lisa Gardner in the Ladies Division by one stroke. Saint Lucians swept the Men’s Division. Habib Chreiki won with 254, Samuel Richelieu scored 256, and Andre Dhanpaul was third with 257.
The Seniors title remained in Saint Lucia as Tim Mangal shot 222 to beat Jamaica’s Sean Morris (229) and Barbados’ Scott Stollmeyer (230). David March of Saint Lucia won the Masters crown with a score of 173 over two days. Barbados’ Ivan Codrington (175) and Saint Lucia’s Peter Devaux (176) took the other podium spots.
Brandon Malon lit up the course with a spectacular Hole-in-One, earning a well-deserved Cabot 2-ball round for this feat.
