The local boxing fraternity remains abuzz after strong outings by local fighters in Martinique and Guadeloupe last weekend. Six promising boxers produced three wins between the Gala de Boxe – La Carré des Majors in Martinique and La Marmite Gala, hosted by Gwada Boxing Club in Guadeloupe.
“The performances across both events highlight the continued growth and development of boxing in Saint Lucia and reflect the discipline, preparation, and commitment of the athletes and coaching staff,” said Shannon Lebourne, vice president of the Saint Lucia Boxing Association.
“Saint Lucia’s boxers continue to demonstrate that hard work, dedication, and exposure at the regional and international levels are creating opportunities and delivering results.”
In Martinique, rising star Alex Nachan kept his unbeaten record with a unanimous decision win over Jules Papin from France’s Mount Blanc Boxing 74. After being named best young boxer at the Caribbean Championships, he again won the Best Youth Boxer Award in Martinique. However, since Nachan was born in Cuba, he is not yet eligible to represent Saint Lucia in competitions outside the region.
In Guadeloupe, another young talent made his mark. Eighteen-year-old Seth Reneau from Mon Repos won his debut match against Bijou Blondel of ABC Intersport from Saint Martin. Reneau controlled the fight and forced Blondel’s corner to throw in the towel in the third round, so the referee stopped the contest and awarded Reneau the win.
Senior boxer Kyle Marcel produced one of the standout moments of the weekend with an emphatic second-round knockout victory over Charley Rolland. He sent his opponent to the canvas, ending the contest in spectacular fashion.
Although he did not win his match, Danaii Cooman showed determination in his rematch against Christopher Jeremie of Guadeloupe.
Daniel Martin showed excellent composure and resilience against the experienced Máxime Alexander. Martin remained competitive throughout the fight but lost after getting tired in the third round.
Tristan Eugene did not compete because of weight issues.
