The global governing body for chess on Thursday announced a major honour for Saint Lucia Chess Federation president Tris-Ann Richards, who has been appointed chair of the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess.
Richards is a woman candidate master, FIDE (World Chess Federation) arbiter, and certified chess instructor. She has worked to develop chess across the Caribbean and beyond. After serving as a councillor on the commission, she is now responsible for encouraging and supporting women and girls to take part in all areas of chess.
The commission works to close the gender gap and promote equality in the chess community by training female players, supporting mothers, and expanding opportunities for women to become arbiters, trainers and organisers.
Richards is one of the few women currently leading a national chess federation. She has also led international projects like the Queen’s Gambit Challenge, which has helped hundreds of women and girls from different countries learn and improve their chess skills.
Under her leadership, the Saint Lucia Chess Federation has also expanded its programmes to promote chess in schools, underserved communities, correctional facilities, among seniors, and through initiatives designed to empower women and girls.
“I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with this responsibility,” said Richards, who thanked her predecessor as chair, Anastasia Sorokina. “I also thank the FIDE leadership and Commission members for their confidence and support. I look forward to working with federations and partners across the world as we continue to create greater opportunities for women and girls and strengthen the global women’s chess community.”
