Halfway through the preliminary phase of the ILCA 7 men’s laser radial sailing event at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, two-time Saint Lucia Olympian Luc Chevrier is in prime position to advance to Friday’s medal round.
Five races in, the 2023 CAC Games bronze medallist is sitting third overall and just two points off the lead. The regatta started with 18 entries.
Chevrier, 27, won the opening race on Saturday. In the second race, on the same day, he was third behind Bermuda’s Sebastian Kempe and Puerto Rico’s Pedro Fernandez. He won the third.

Returning to Punta Salinas Beach on Sunday, to warm waters and steady wind, Chevrier placed fourth in the fourth and fifth races, with Joshua Higgins of The Bahamas moving into third in both preliminaries.
After five races of 10, Kempe and Fernandez are tied on seven points, with Chevrier on nine. Kempe leads with two first-place finishes. Higgins sits fifth overall as of Monday morning, and Mexico’s Gerardo Rodriguez is fourth.
With Monday off, there will be three races on Tuesday and two more on Wednesday, to decide the top 10 for the gold medal fleet on Friday.
Saint Lucia’s sailing champion needs to finish among the top two countries that do not already have a spot confirmed for the 2027 Pan Am Games in order to confirm his spot at next year’s regatta in Lima, Peru. He is presently in qualifying position.
