The life and legacy of Sir Garfield Sobers will be honoured by the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) during the 2026 season. Before the first match at each tournament location, there will be a minute’s applause in his memory.
Sobers died on July 17, 2026, at his home in Saint Michael, Barbados, at age 89.
The former West Indies captain is widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer in history. He became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket, achieving this for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in 1968. Sobers had a celebrated 20-year international career, and his unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 was the highest individual Test score for 36 years.
Pete Russell, CEO of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League, heralded Sobers’ contribution to the sport.
“It is only fitting that every ground we play on this season pauses to honour him,” Russell said.
This tribute is just one of several ways the CPL will honour Sir Garry during the tournament.
