Johnnel Eugene has reminded local and regional selectors of his talent. The 27-year-old former West Indies youth batsman and Windward Islands Volcanoes player hit a century in Canada’s British Columbia Mainland Cricket League on Sunday and now leads the batting leaderboard.
Eugene has accumulated 479 runs in 17 innings for the Windies Cricket Club in the league’s Premier Division. The high-water mark of his campaign came this past weekend against Langley Titans I, where he hit 107 from 120 balls, with six fours and nine sixes.
Eugene’s talent has been clear since his youth career. He toured the UK with the West Indies Under-15 team in 2014, joined the regional Under-19 training squad, and was named MVP of the 2016 West Indies regional Under-17 Championship.
Eugene, once named Saint Lucia Junior Sportsman of the Year, was drafted as an emerging player for the Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League. Last year, he set a new record in the Saint Lucia Premier League with the highest individual score in SPL history: 153 not out from just 67 balls.
In addition to his batting, Eugene took 10 wickets in 13 innings in Canada, keeping an economy rate of 4.95. Even with his strong performances, including a 92 earlier in the season, Windies I finished last out of 10 teams.
