Warner Semi Francis has released his latest single, In the Mood, a romantic track that was pulled from his musical vault after being written several years ago.
Speaking to St Lucia Times this week, Semi said the song was originally intended for another album.
“This is a song that I wrote a few years ago. It was supposed to be on my Love Strong album but when we got to the crunch, we never got a chance to finish it,” he said. “So I was going through my files recently and I said, ‘hey, let me revive this song’. So it was just the right time.”
Asked about the inspiration behind the song, Semi said it reflects his outlook on life and the importance of creating special moments.
“I always look for the best things in life, so even if you don’t have it, you can imagine it and this is what In the Mood is all about.”
He added: “It is about creating that special moment. You don’t want to do too much talking, you just want to have that nice romantic evening with the person that you love. So, yeah, that’s how the song actually came about.”
For Semi, who has been consistently releasing music for about a decade, bringing each song to life remains a rewarding experience.
He said every song “feels like birthing a child”.
“Evey song feels like a degree, even. It gives you a really good feeling to know that something was a thought and to see the finished product – the process, the people that you actually worked with – when you hear the finished product, you feel really, really good,” the singer-songwriter told St Lucia Times.
From growing up listening to reggae classics to releasing his first reggae single, Put Yourself in My Place, a Ken Lazarus cover, Semi has developed into a prolific songwriter.
In the Mood is another reflection of that musical journey.
As the song gains traction across various music platforms, Semi is already preparing his next single, which he said will lean more towards conscious reggae.
“And, of course, that Christmas song every year will be a must again this year,” he said with a broad smile.
In the Mood is now available on YouTube, all streaming platforms and semimusic.com.
