La Feuille clean-up highlights waste challenge

The Green Movement has launched its “Let’s Move Together” Community Clean-Up Initiative, following its first exercise in La Feuille, Monchy, where a six-member team encountered roadside litter, discarded household items and other debris.

The clean-up last Sunday started at the main road bus area, but the team soon discovered that the work required was more extensive than initially anticipated. Near the Monchy entrance, they encountered a considerable accumulation of discarded household items and other waste.

What began as a roadside clean-up therefore developed into a wider effort, drawing attention to broader issues of waste management and community responsibility.

The Green Movement said the experience demonstrated that keeping communities clean requires more than removing existing waste.

The organisation, which is also involved in trucking, construction and related services, said waste management forms a significant part of its regular operations. However, it believes collection alone cannot address every challenge affecting communities.

It said responsible disposal practices, education and public participation are also necessary to maintain cleaner surroundings.

The initiative is intended to provide opportunities for residents, community groups and volunteers to work together, identify areas requiring attention and take practical action.

The Green Movement said it hopes the programme will encourage greater community responsibility and motivate residents to recognise their role in maintaining shared spaces.

“Cleaner communities require all of us,” the organisation said, pointing to the contribution that can be made by individuals, businesses, community groups and volunteers.

Residents can support the initiative by volunteering during future clean-up exercises, properly disposing of unwanted items, maintaining their immediate surroundings and encouraging responsible waste practices.

Education will also form part of the programme, with the organisation intending to encourage conversations about proper waste disposal without pointing fingers or assigning blame.

The Green Movement said that while clean-up exercises can address waste that has already accumulated, continued participation and responsible disposal practices will be necessary to maintain the improvements.

The organisation is now considering where to take the initiative next and is inviting residents and community groups to suggest locations that could benefit from a clean-up.

Members of the public can also support the programme by contributing supplies or other resources, volunteering their time or partnering with the Green Movement to expand the initiative into other communities.

The organisation said people do not need to belong to a large group to contribute, noting that individuals can support community efforts and encourage responsible behaviour.

The Green Movement described the La Feuille exercise as the beginning of “Let’s Move Together” and is asking the public to suggest where the team should go next.
