Caroo officially accredited as Saint Lucia’s CARICOM ambassador

Saint Lucia’s new Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Dr Janet Caroo has been officially accredited to the regional grouping.

CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett formally welcomed Caroo during an accreditation ceremony last Friday at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana.

Caroo was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to CARICOM and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on September 1, 2026.

Her responsibilities include regional cooperation, mobility, trade, investment, innovation and strengthening connections among Caribbean people.

In her remarks, Caroo said she was taking up the position at a time that requires “sustained commitment, deeper cooperation and, above all, even greater deliverables for all our people”.

“I come to CARICOM with a deeply felt conviction: regional integration must be measured by the opportunities it creates and the difference it makes in people’s lives,” she said.

She outlined four priorities for her tenure: promoting opportunities for movement, education, skills development and employment across CARICOM; strengthening trade linkages for Saint Lucian producers and service providers; deepening institutional, digital and people-to-people connections; and showcasing Saint Lucian culture, creativity, talent and ideas throughout the region.

Speaking at the accreditation ceremony, Dr Barnett noted that Caroo’s appointment comes as Saint Lucia serves as Chair of CARICOM, under the leadership of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.

The CARICOM Secretary-General said Pierre has placed emphasis on ensuring that regional integration delivers tangible benefits to the people of the Community.

She also highlighted Caroo’s role as Head of Saint Lucia’s Regional Integration Unit, describing her ambassadorship as a critical position in Saint Lucia’s engagement with the regional integration process.

“Saint Lucia has long been an active member of CARICOM and consistently demonstrated its commitment to regional integration and collective action,” Dr Barnett said.
