Health officials in Saint Lucia are concerned about emerging COVID-19 variants and have warned citizens not to lower their guard.
This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its guidelines on mask-wearing in community settings, COVID-19 treatments, and clinical management.
In the update, WHO said it continues to recommend the use of masks by the public in specific situations irrespective of the local epidemiological situation, given the current spread of COVID-19 globally.
“We hear about new variants every week, and this is just to point to us that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over,” Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs Minister Moses Jn Baptiste said.
“While we notice in Saint Lucia, the rest of the Caribbean and the world – we notice certainly that infections, serious illness is on the decline but we see what’s happening in China. We see a resurgence of infections,” the Minister asserted.
“That is why we cannot let our guard down,” he observed.
Jn Baptiste spoke Tuesday on the sidelines of a meeting of the House of Assembly.
He disclosed that Saint Lucia was fast-tracking to ensure that the country has isolation centres and areas to house infected individuals if needed.
“We are preparing but hoping that this does not meet the level of the Delta variant where we had so many infections and unfortunate deaths,” the Vieux Fort North MP stated.
The same health official who couldn’t tell the difference between somebody left leg and right leg?
I’m still waiting for the Ministry of Health to announce the emergence in St Lucia of the Truth Variant of Covid-19.
They simply cannot admit that if there truly is a variant or variants on Island, that it is the tourists who are the main carriers, for goodness sake we’re not all dumb and blinded by the reality
