Saint Lucia’s Ackeem Auguste shines with maiden T20I 50 as WI sweep Bangladesh

The West Indies men completed a sweep of Bangladesh in the Dutch Bangla T20 International series, winning the final T20 International by five wickets on October 31. The fixture saw several changes to the team, including the inclusion of talented Saint Lucian left-hander Ackeem Auguste, a specialist top order batsman.

Having been put into bowl, the West Indies restricted the Tigers to a modest 151 runs off their 20 overs. The only bright spark in the Bangladeshi batting was Tanzid Hasan, who scored a fighting 89 from 62 deliveries and contributed 58 percent of his team’s total runs.

Apart from Gudakesh Motie, all the West Indian bowlers claimed at least one wicket. Romario Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-36. Shepherd’s haul included a hat trick, making him only the second West Indian to achieve this feat in the format, after Jason Holder away to England in 2022.

Chasing a slightly under-par total, the Men in Maroon got off to a slow start, sitting at 6-1 after 3.3 overs, having lost the early wicket of Alick Athanaze. Amir Jangoo contributed 34 runs before getting out, leaving the innings in need of stability.

This stability came from Saint Lucian star Ackeem Auguste. The former regional Under-19 captain brought up a maiden T20 International half-century off just 24 deliveries. Auguste’s run-scoring was complemented by West Indies stand-in captain Roston Chase, who also reached a half-century. The two Saint Lucia Kings teammates — Auguste (50) and Chase (50) — put together 91 runs while batting together, effectively winning the game for the Men in Maroon.

Player of the Match Chase commended his young counterpart on his performance.

“Auguste is an impressive player. [He has] been showing positive signs. He was struggling during his knock, just told him to keep playing his natural game,” he said.
