A man from Micoud says he no longer feels safe at home after masked bandits broke in twice in three days. He and his elderly mother are now traumatised and worried they could be targeted again.
Ronnie Philgence, who lives with his 94-year-old mother in Ti Rocher, told St Lucia Times that the experience has left him feeling anxious all the time. Philgence, who has chronic arthritis and uses crutches, believes the family was targeted because they are vulnerable.
“I’m afraid of the house,” he said. “Once it’s nighttime, I get afraid. I’m very scared for my life.”
Philgence said the first break-in occurred on July 4, when three masked men forced their way into the house. He said he was held at gunpoint while the intruders searched the property before fleeing with about EC$6,000.
He thought the worst was over, but the thieves returned.
Three days later, Philgence said four masked men broke in again. This time they made off with several electronic items, including a television, game consoles and stereo equipment. They also stole his vehicle before fleeing.
Police have recovered the vehicle, but Philgence says getting it back has not made him feel any safer.
Instead, he worries that because he has trouble moving around and cares for his elderly mother, the family remains an easy target.
“They know we’re vulnerable,” he said, explaining why he fears the men could return.
As police continue their investigations into the break-ins, Philgence says he is simply hoping to regain peace of mind.
