A man from Micoud says he no longer feels safe at home after masked bandits broke in twice in three days. He and his elderly mother are now traumatised and worried they could be targeted again.
Ronnie Philgence, who lives with his 94-year-old mother in Ti Rocher, told St Lucia Times that the experience has left him feeling anxious all the time. Philgence, who has chronic arthritis and uses crutches, believes the family was targeted because they are vulnerable.
“I’m afraid of the house,” he said. “Once it’s nighttime, I get afraid. I’m very scared for my life.”
Philgence said the first break-in occurred on July 4, when three masked men forced their way into the house. He said he was held at gunpoint while the intruders searched the property before fleeing with about EC$6,000.
He thought the worst was over, but the thieves returned.
Three days later, Philgence said four masked men broke in again. This time they made off with several electronic items, including a television, game consoles and stereo equipment. They also stole his vehicle before fleeing.
Police have recovered the vehicle, but Philgence says getting it back has not made him feel any safer.
Instead, he worries that because he has trouble moving around and cares for his elderly mother, the family remains an easy target.
“They know we’re vulnerable,” he said, explaining why he fears the men could return.
As police continue their investigations into the break-ins, Philgence says he is simply hoping to regain peace of mind.

In many countries, criminals get additional charges added for attacking the elderly and disabled. In Florida, it’s a crime to victimize anyone above 65 years old. St. Lucian laws are so behind the times. In many places, one can be killed while disabling someone else’s home security system. The law looks at it as a preliminary act before attacking the house residents. If only someone had a backbone to put order in this place.
It breaks my heart to see the kind of society that we are becoming. I mean crime is increasing everywhere, but our island is small. How can we regain our morals and values again? How can we slow down the elevation of crime? We need to tackle the root causes….its just tooo much!

I am literally looking at this disabled gentleman and wondering how could anyone be so heartless towards him. It appears as if there are monsters/demons on the island of St. Lucia masquerading as humans. I am not saying anything should happen to someone who is not disabled – but this just breaks my heart. What is the government doing ???????
KARMA will get them sooner than later for sure as well as all those who partake of their ill gotten gains.
…..and Jay Bird just exactly what do you want or wish this government to do ?? Stop this prolific blame game it’s severs no purpose. Folks know who they are, and the community should rally around this family a take turns “keeping an eye on them “ but this not the kind of people we are, everyone is cowardly turning their eye the other way instead of helping them. Community policing is the most effective way to fight crime, to send a message that this kind of slackness will not be tolerated around here; but as per usual our inherited timid demeanor and persona form Children of Himalayas, we are reluctant to uprise about anything except politics.
At the Most Honorable Lucian Highgrade – since you have the answers for everything St. Lucian, and are always attacking those who express their own personal opinion which may differ from yours (for which they have an absolute right) – you should definitely be the Prime Minister.
