Saint Lucia secure gold and silver at ECVA tournament

Saint Lucia earned bronze and silver at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Indoor Championships on Sunday evening. The women’s team finished third, while the men’s team placed second at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

The women’s team missed out on a third straight title after winning the last full championship in 2024 and taking gold in last year’s Final 4 in Antigua & Barbuda. This time, they secured bronze by defeating the British Virgin Islands 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22).

“We feel great,” captain and setter Cindy Wilson said. “Third-place medal, it’s okay, it’s good. We came and did what we had to do. We ended on a good note, which is good.”

Bermuda’s women’s team beat Antigua & Barbuda 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-20) to win gold. This result marked a third consecutive finals loss for Antigua & Barbuda.

Saint Lucia’s men’s quest for a return to gold at this level continues. After grabbing bronze two years ago in Antigua & Barbuda, they got silver last year in the Final Four. This time, they were undone 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-13) by St Vincent & the Grenadines in the title tilt, reversing their result from pool play on Friday.

“First and foremost, I want to say thank you to all my guys that gave me what they had,” said head coach Levi Leonce. “Unfortunately, we just had a breakdown in serve receive today. It kept us a bit out of rhythm; they got a couple more aces than I would have been comfortable with. But that’s what it looks like when we have a breakdown in our serve receive.

“It’s not surprising; it’s something our team knew would be a problem if we were out of rhythm. And St Vincent came to play today, so kudos to them, respect to them as well.”
