Youth basketball series to feature regional, international teams

The fifth annual Aloysius “Loloy” Daniel Youth Classic Tournament starts on Monday, August 17, at the Beausejour Gymnasium and continues through Friday. This year, for the first time, teams from five different territories will take part.

The tournament is for boys under 18 and is named after Daniel, a former national basketball player and strong supporter of local sports. He died three years ago after moving to Canada.

Until 2025, the only outside team was New Chapter Academy (NCA) Warriors from Trinidad & Tobago, who have won the tournament three times in succession. This time around, in addition to the Trinbagonians, teams from Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana and the United Kingdom will also compete.

In 2026, D-UP Basketball Academy from Guyana, Antigua Pit Bulls, and M2KMAS Basketball from the UK will compete against the NCA Warriors and three teams from Saint Lucia. Inaugural champions in 2022, East Coast Academy will field the Tigers and Lions teams, and Basketball For The Future will also take part.

During the five-day tournament, the six teams will play a full round-robin. Games start at 2 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and at 1 p.m. on Friday.

The ECA Tigers will start their tournament against Basketball For The Future. The ECA Lions will play D-UP Academy, and the Antigua Pitbulls will take on the NCA Warriors.
