Saint Lucian Johnson Charles smashed 78 off just 48 deliveries to secure a rare win for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots against the Barbados Tridents in this year’s Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League on Tuesday, September 1.
The Millet native joined the Kittitian-based franchise this year after an extended stint donning the blue of the Saint Lucia Kings.
Chasing a mammoth 217 posted by the Tridents at Warner Park following a century from Quinton de Kock, Charles was a standout for the home side. The CPL’s all-time top run-scorer smashed seven sixes and six fours in his innings at what is typically a high-scoring venue.
Charles’s knock was not without controversy. He was caught off a full toss and initially ruled out by the third umpire. The Saint Lucian was making his way off the field when the third umpire changed his decision to not out, bringing Charles back into the game.
Commenting on the incident, Charles said: “From the very get-go, I thought it was a no-ball because it’s all about the point of contact, and I thought it was a no-ball right there and then. But you know, some controversies just liven up the game, and it’s all up to the umpires.”
The innings marked a much-needed return to form for Charles, who had struggled to get out of the blocks so far in the tournament. With his team languishing at the bottom of the standings, the opening batsman believes he can help the Patriots rebound for a late playoff push.
“Well, yeah, I’m a bit late to the party,” Charles said in a post-match interview. “I must say, I’ve been seeing the ball pretty big, and I’ve been in good form. Confidence is high, but it was just not coming through, and that’s cricket. You know, that’s how the game goes. But I’m happy I’m back and doing good things for the team. Even if I’m late to the party, I’m just hoping I can put the team in a very good position.”
The Patriots will complete their home leg in two days when they face Charles’ former team, the Saint Lucia Kings, on Thursday.
