A 76-year-old woman in Ecuador, discovered alive during her wake, has died one week after being in intensive care.

Local media reports said the woman surprised relatives earlier this month by knocking on her coffin.

The BBC identified the woman as Bella Montoya.

A doctor at a hospital in Babahoyo City declared her dead last week.

But when mourners attending Montoya’s wake heard her knocking on her coffin, she was immediately rushed back to the same hospital for treatment.

However, after seven days in intensive care, Ecuador’s health ministry confirmed she died from an ischemic stroke on Friday.

Ecuador’s Ministry of Health has announced a technical committee to review how the hospital issues death certificates.
