Saint Lucia’s Jayhan Odlum-Smith competed in the opening round of the men’s 100m freestyle swimming event on Tuesday morning at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad. The national record holder lowered his personal-best and finished second in his heat.
The 22-year-old completed the race in 50.39 seconds, narrowly second to Nikolas Antoniou (50.35). Odlum-Smith, who has been training in France most recently, swam the first 50m in 24.42, and was second last at that stage, but had an amazing second 50 to set a new national record.
In June, Odlum-Smith swam 50.60 to finish 19th at the Spanish Trials.
At the La Defense Arena in Paris 2024, swimming from Lane 3, his 50.39 not only placed him second in his heat, but 44th overall out of 79 competitors.
Odlum-Smith will not advance to the next round of competition.
