UWP Demands Apology From Frederick To SLMDA President

The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has strongly condemned Castries Central MP, Richard Frederick’s ‘verbal attack’ on the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) President, Dr. Merle Clarke.

The condemnation came in a statement from UWP Public Relations Officer Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute on behalf of the party, which wants Frederick to apologise.

SLMDA President Dr. Merle Clarke wrote a strongly worded July 31 letter to the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) Board, complaining about many problems at the Owen King European Union Hospital (OKEUH), including unavailable essential resources.

The SLMDA President, who wrote on behalf of hospital physicians, urged the MHMC Board to fix the problems or quit.

However, at a weekend meeting of the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), Richard Frederick highlighted the Government’s efforts to address the OKEUH’s problems.

Frederick also took the SLMDA President to task, suggesting she was in cahoots with the opposition UWP to undermine the Government’s efforts.

Nevertheless, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, at the same SLP event, promised to address the physicians’ concerns.

“We are going to speak with the doctors and the nurses and we are going to resolve those issues,” Pierre stated, later disclosing that we would meet with the SLMDA Executive.

The opposition UWP for its part,  said it stood with the SLMDA President and supported Dr. Clarke’s right and duty to raise the ‘critical issues’ she highlighted in her letter.

According to the UWP, Richard Frederick’s attempt to intimidate and silence a medical professional advocating for necessary improvements in the Health sector clearly violated the principles of good governance and accountability.

The opposition party urged immediate action to address the pressing issues at OKEU Hospital.

And it demanded a public apology from Minister Frederick to the SLMDA President.

  1. Time to get the pig out of government and public representation. In the last two years god help anyone who he perceives is against him….. exactly what Melvin was trying to avoid….

  2. That’s what got him there, that’s all he knows. Cringeworthy..Begging to join a party that “Left you on read” for 7 months.

No dummy, it’s not the approval process that takes too long, it’s your approval process.! 😭

  3. Please don’t make the health care of the country political. There is a problem at the hospital… Let’s fix it. We have all heard the horror stories coming out of VH and now OKEU. The PM has the right attitude. Have a conversation with the Doctors, nurses and other staff… Find out what and where the problem is…. And fix it.

  4. You see all those people asking Richard to apologized, they seem to have forgotten when the former Prime Minister called St. Lucians BARKING DOGS, MENDICANTS, FLOG THE NI..ERS on the square. What did they say again? Richard just called JOL CALAY a flambeau zeleve and they are so mad. Richard no apology.

  5. In my mind, the slp minister Jn. Pierre is not a bad person. He is just in the company of sheep in wolves clothing. He is under pressure with people He have elected in his cabinet. He needs to get rid of them and seek advice from the UWP Executive members if he is to succeed in running this country – St. Lucia, especially with help for the Health Sector/Ministry

  6. Any right-thinking person should realize that this individual should never be allowed to serve in Government.
