Saint Lucia Establishes Task Forces to Monitor US Policy Changes

Government has launched two task forces to assess the impact of recent United States policy changes, including new tariffs and immigration enforcement measures, which could have significant significant economic and social implications for Saint Lucia.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said in a statement on Monday that he has directed the Ministry of Commerce to form a special task force to examine the ramifications of the newly imposed tariffs.

The task force will engage key stakeholders to evaluate the impact on trade, local businesses, and consumers.

At the same time, the Ministry of Home Affairs will lead a separate task force focused on addressing the deportation of Saint Lucian nationals from the US.

Prime Minister Pierre acknowledged that several US-funded programmes, including the USAID-sponsored Violence Interrupter Programme, the Community Reintegration Programme (CREP), and the OASIS Programme are currently on hold.

“The Government of Saint Lucia will do everything within its power to safeguard the economic stability and social well-being of Saint Lucia,” Pierre said. “ We will continue engaging with our international partners and stakeholders to protect our national interests.”

US President Donald Trump suspended his threat of steep tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Monday, agreeing to a 30-day pause in return for concessions on border and crime enforcement with the two neighboring countries.

US tariffs on China are still due to take effect.

  1. Mr. Prime Minister, how about a task force to address the local issues. A task force for Health Issues, A task force for the crimes, A task force for financial crimes and a task force for infrastructure activities.

  2. The impact will definitely be felt in St. Lucia – therefore it is paramount to establish a body within St. Lucia to deal with those areas which were previously funded and will now be severely affected by US policy changes — as well as the impact on those citizens which may/may not be deported.

The impact is already being felt by those of us who reside legally in the US. My niece works with the Federal Government and she received the email a few days ago. There are agencies being disbanded as of the writing of this comment. There are individuals who just needed perhaps one more year prior to retirement who now have to find a Plan B as they were forced out of the workplace – this is serious on every level.

We need to understand that this is a new reality [under this present US administration] which will have severe impact throughout the Caribbean region and the entire world at large in the near future and beyond. As for me, I know where my help come from and I am not worried. Godspeed.

  3. Can’t just start task forces when these very concerns and data forcasting is SUPPOSED to be the daily work of some public workers…trade officers, Economists…financial analysts? What’s the role of export saint lucia anyway?

  4. What is CELAC doing? Isn’t there supposed to be an emergency summit for the Caribbean CELAC members? Mr PM us silent on this ….
