Motorcyclist Injured In Sunny Acres Accident

A motorcyclist sustained a broken left ankle and multiple body abrasions in a collision with a car at Sunny Acres, Castries, on Saturday morning.

The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) headquarters in Castries responded with an ambulance and a fire truck after learning of the incident at 7:14.

The responders transported the motorcyclist to the OKEU Hospital, but the car driver involved in the collision was unharmed.

On Friday, Fire Chief Ditney Downes expressed concern about the frequency of road accidents and the severity of victims’ injuries.

Downes told St. Lucia Times that in addition to impacting the SLFS resources, at times all the department’s ambulances countrywide are simultaneously engaged in responses.

“So sometimes there is a long waiting period because of the unavailability of an ambulance and it is not because we don’t have the vehicles, but it is due to the frequency of the emergency calls,” the Fire Chief explained.

According to Saint Lucia Fire Service records, emergency personnel responded to 91 vehicle incidents involving 123 patients last month.

By contrast, in January 2024, emergency personnel responded to 62 motor vehicle incidents, accounting for 95 patients.

In addition to to road incidents, fire department personnel made over 700 responses to medical emergencies and nearly 100 relating to violent clashes resulting in blunt-force and penetrating trauma last month.
