Several chess players and well-wishers gathered at the Gros Islet Human Resource Centre on Sunday for the National High School Chess Championships.

A total of 70 participants showcased their skills in this strategic and competitive sport. The tournament is part of a broader Sports ministry initiative to promote chess in schools and aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance alternative sports on the island.

After an intense day of competition, the following teams emerged victorious:

🥇 1st Place: St Mary’s College SLU Team 1 – Ariel De Leon & D’Yorni Cilpa
🥈 2nd Place: Vieux Fort Comprehensive Team 2 – Valdez Remy & Noah Blenman
🥉 3rd Place: International School Team 1 – Chelsea Wahid & Shekinah Leonce

The other schools present were Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary, St Joseph’s Convent, Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary, Choiseul Secondary, Corinth Secondary and  Beanefield Comprehensive.

In addition to the team awards, special individual accolades were presented:
🏆 Top Boy: D’Yorni Cilpa – St Mary’s College
🏆 Top Girl: Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Chelsea Wahid – International School

The event not only highlighted the exceptional talent of young chess players but also reinforced the importance of critical thinking and strategic decision-making among students.

Organisers expressed their enthusiasm for the growing popularity of chess in schools and were thankful for the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports via their Chess Federation Facebook page.
