Four students from the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Academy are receiving medical care after a truck wheel broke loose and struck them on Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. along the Choc Highway as students waited for a bus home. According to the school’s principal, Vidal Philip, some students managed to run when they saw the wheel approaching, while others, unaware of the danger, were struck despite warnings and screams from their peers.
The impact left many students in distress, with some crying uncontrollably at the scene.
The four injured students, all in Form 5 and preparing for their CXC examinations, sustained moderate to severe injuries. Two have been discharged but are still undergoing medical tests, while the other two remain in care and are receiving further treatment.
“For me, especially as the students are in Form 5 and preparing for the most important exam of their lives, it makes it worse,” Philip said.
The principal noted that the school community has been left in shock, particularly since the students were in an area generally considered safe. In response, the school brought in five counsellors to provide emotional support for those who witnessed the accident, as well as for students close to the victims. The school has also arranged for pastoral support.
“We are in close contact with the families of the injured students and will continue to support them through this difficult time,” Philip stated.
Medical evaluations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the students’ injuries.
