The Army Rugby League Women got their Women’s Southern Championship campaign off to a flying start with an overwhelming 30-point victory, including two tries from Saint Lucia’s Winnie Della Rene, a private. Playing at Hemel Stags, Army Rugby League won 34-4 over Brentwood Rugby League Football Club on Sunday.
Lance Corporal Shannon Dring was named player of the match after she scored three tries and made three conversions. Saint Lucian Rene added two tries while Private Evie Litchfield and Sergeant Dionne Donald got one each.
Army Rugby League were too strong and fit for the Brentwood Eels, an enthusiastic but inexperienced side. The fixture was the first of an opening round double-header in the Women’s Southern Championship and was played in good spirits under sunny skies.
“I am extremely proud of the work rate and dedication from each and every player, on and off the pitch today and all this week,” said Army Rugby League Women’s head captain, Sergeant Kat Williams. “They really came together and put on a great display of Rugby League.”
“It’s good to start the season off with a win,” added head coach Corporal Jack Giblin. “Fundamentals are coming together nicely but we still have plenty to work on throughout the season. Proud of the team today and the hard work all week.
“Thank you to Brentwood Eels, who gave us a good game and a tough battle.”
All eyes switch to Round 2 on Sunday, June 15, when the Army women take on the Anglian Vipers Rugby League.
